Adaptive Physical Education (APE)

Evaluating motor development to ensure every student can participate safely and successfully in Physical Education.

Active Participation for All Students

Physical Education is a mandated part of the curriculum in California. When disability impacts a student's ability to participate in general PE safely or successfully, Adaptive Physical Education (APE) services may be required.

CAS provides Independent Educational Evaluations by credentialed APE specialists. We assess a student's gross motor skills, object control, and physical fitness to recommend appropriate placement, modifications, or direct APE services.

Assessment Focus:

  • Locomotor Skills: Running, jumping, hopping, and galloping.
  • Object Control: Throwing, catching, kicking, and striking.
  • Physical Fitness: Strength, endurance, and flexibility appropriate for age.
  • Functional Skills: Ability to follow rules, interact with peers, and participate in group games.

PE Participation Issues?

Is your child sitting out during PE? An APE evaluation can identify the support they need.

Common Questions

What is the goal of APE?

The goal is to develop motor skills and fitness so that students can participate in physical education activities as independently as possible, ideally alongside their peers.

How is APE different from PT?

Physical Therapy (PT) focuses on the medical aspects of mobility and function. APE is an instructional service focused on the curriculum of Physical Education (sports skills, fitness, games).
