Physical Therapy Evaluations

Assessing mobility, strength, and access to ensure every student can navigate their learning environment safely.

Physical Therapy in the Educational Setting

School-based Physical Therapy is distinct from clinical PT. The goal is not just medical rehabilitation, but ensuring that a student with a physical disability can access their school campus and benefit from their education.

CAS provides evaluations to determine if a student requires PT services, accommodations, or adaptive equipment. Our physical therapists assess functional mobility within the context of the classroom, playground, and campus.

Assessment Areas:

  • Functional Mobility: Walking, climbing stairs, and navigating the campus safely.
  • Postural Control: Sitting stability required for desk work and attending to instruction.
  • Gross Motor Skills: Coordination, balance, and strength for school activities.
  • Equipment Needs: Evaluation for walkers, standers, or wheelchair positioning.

Mobility Concerns?

Ensure your student has the physical access they are legally entitled to.

Common Questions

When is PT required in school?

PT is a related service under IDEA. It is required when a student needs physical therapy intervention to benefit from their special education program—for example, to move between classrooms or sit upright during lessons.

What is the difference between OT and PT?

Generally, PT focuses on gross motor skills (walking, balance, large muscle groups) and mobility. OT focuses on fine motor skills (handwriting, using tools) and sensory processing.
