Adapted Physical Education (APE)

Evaluating motor development to ensure every student can participate safely and successfully in Physical Education.

Active Participation for All Students

Physical Education is a mandated part of the curriculum in California. When disability impacts a student's ability to participate in general PE safely or successfully, Adapted Physical Education (APE) services may be required.

CAS provides Independent Educational Evaluations by credentialed Adapted PE specialists. We assess a student's gross motor skills, object control, and physical fitness to recommend appropriate placement, modifications, or direct Adapted PE services.

Assessment Focus:

  • Locomotor Skills: Running, jumping, hopping, and galloping.
  • Object Control: Throwing, catching, kicking, and striking.
  • Physical Fitness: Strength, endurance, and flexibility appropriate for age.
  • Functional Skills: Ability to follow rules, interact with peers, and participate in group games.

Common Questions

What is the goal of Adapted PE?

The goal is to develop motor skills and physical fitness so that students can participate in physical education activities as independently and safely as possible, ideally alongside their peers.

How is Adapted PE different from Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy (PT) focuses on the medical and functional aspects of gross motor mobility. Adapted PE is an instructional special education service focused specifically on the curriculum of Physical Education (sports skills, fitness, games, and motor development).
